Expeditions, an immersive discovery of Patagonia.
Where did the many months of research, preparation, field trips, recce, talks, meetings and more meetings go? So much has been done in preparation for today.
The crew of O/S and all its collaborators are thrilled to present our first two unique expeditions into Patagonia - Argentina. The expeditions rescue untold stories of explorers, dreamers, families, professionals, conservationists and lovers of their successes, failures and struggles and those that have chosen Patagonia as their home, place to learn and research and ensure that what makes it very special and unique is preserved for future generations.
They immerse our travellers into the history and culture of one of the wildest places on earth, Patagonia.
The future lies in the hands of the explorers... and in the beauty, they go discovering as they cross the endless frontiers and borders of this land. It is they that are developing infinite love for Nature and Mankind.
— Jacques Yves Cousteau - French Naturalist / Explorer —
Guardians of the Coast... There is a two thousand km long road in Patagonia that connects hundreds of farms, towns and cities. It is called the Blue Route. It is a scenic road that takes you to the largest Natural Museum on Earth.
Three million years ago, the sea used to cover the whole region, and Patagonia was a part of the ocean bed. Sediments started collecting, and progressively an unimaginable forest grew, covering great extensions of land. It took 150.000.000 years for continents and seas to separate. Volcanic eruptions gave way to the formation of the Andes mountain range, and in doing so, the continent gained altitude causing the sea to retreat.
In the process, millions of signs and messages remained behind. Fossils and petrified marine organisms are proof of this past. And many species of mammals and birds show us the present. Nonetheless, both of these are proof of only a very small portion of the underworld of this region that mankind has still to discover. Fortunately, live species are present, guarding the coast and sea, that still have so much to tell us.
... but when the steppe traps you with its unfathomable attraction, you can not escape blending into its physical and spiritual identity, forever.
— Francisco Pascacio Moreno - Argentinean Naturalist / Explorer —
Far away and long ago ... In this part of the world, everything is distant and remote… One has no idea of the vastness of Patagonia till you get there. It extends in the North, form the Atlantic Ocean to the imposing Andes mountain range. Both extremes connected by the endless steppe and eventually by woods that are lined by winding rivers. In the South, the flats and mountains slope down and get immersed in the Beagle Channel, whose angry seas have witnessed many an expedition of our forefathers, as well as the loss of many seamen and their vessels.
The expedition introduces us into a story, as observers of the passing through of explorers and naturalists, as well as witnesses of the legacy the first settlers have left behind. It allows us to connect with their descendants, who share their life history and the stories about how their families ended up settling in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, captivated by its landscape and the chance of owning huge extensions of land for sheep farming.
These people now will open up their homes to us, to share their daily life and work, as well as to show us the most mesmerizing scenery and wonders of Nature imaginable. We enter Patagonia hosted by its true people.
