The urgency of climate change
Today, the relationship between tourism and climate change is undeniable. Travelling, exploring and connecting with extraordinary landscapes and cultures also invites us to become more aware of the impact we have on the planet. We have a responsibility to protect the resources on which tourism depends, including the natural environments, wildlife and cultural heritage that bring travel experiences to life.
However, the ecosystems on which tourism depends are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme temperatures, floods, droughts and sea level rise, among others. This undoubtedly poses a risk to the future of tourism in many destinations and, ultimately, to the competitiveness of the sector.
Faced with this situation, taking action becomes an opportunity. Moving towards more responsible, resilient and regenerative tourism means rethinking the way we design and offer experiences, prioritising the protection of the territories that inspire us. Building tourism that is aligned with caring for the planet is not only a shared responsibility, but also the way to ensure that future generations can continue to explore and marvel at the world.
Climate action in tourism through the Glasgow declaration
Climate action efforts in tourism focus on measuring and reducing GHG emissions while strengthening destinations’ capacity to adapt to climate-induced impacts. This requires understanding the challenges we face as an industry, collaboration, and a clear pathway to achieve global commitments to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050.
The Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism was launched at COP26 in November 2021 to raise the climate ambition of tourism stakeholders and ensure decisive action to support these global commitments.
Since August 2024, Onesixth Expeditions has been a signatory of the Glasgow Declaration. By signing the Declaration, we have committed to developing and implementing its Climate Action Plan. Therefore, our Climate Transition Action Plan aligns with the five pathways to accelerate and coordinate climate action in tourism outlined in Glasgow.
“We believe tourism must evolve from extractive to regenerative — from footprint to stewardship, and from compliance to leadership”
Onesixth Expeditions is committed to building a resilient, low-carbon and purpose-driven tourism model — aligned with global climate goals and investor expectations.
