Living the wild way...
There is a two thousand km long road in Patagonia that connects hundreds of farms, towns and cities. It is called the Blue Route. It is a scenic road that takes you to the largest Natural Museum on Earth…
Fossils and petrified marine organisms are proof of this past. And many species of mammals and birds show us the present. Nonetheless, both of these are proof of only a very small portion of the underworld of this region that mankind has still to discover.
Fortunately, live species are present, guarding the coast and sea, that still have so much to tell us.
Expedition Itinerary
-
Buenos Aires has always been the meeting place where expeditionaries, biologists, naturalists got together to discuss and almost brag about their theories, which came from their expeditions mainly performed in Patagonia.
After our arrival at the hotel and lunch, we will walk through the Recoleta neighbourhood and the Botanical Garden to marvelling at the wild side of the city.
At night, we will enjoy a welcome dinner together with the Onesixth Expeditions crew.
-
We will visit the southern area of Buenos Aires, exploring the neighborhoods of San Telmo, Plaza de Mayo, and La Boca district.
After Lunch, we will have some time at leisure to explore the city.
At night, we will visit a Tango house to enjoy the cultural side of the vibrant city of Buenos Aires.
-
In the morning we will board the flight to the city of Trelew.
With a two hours drive from Trelew and the opportunity to enjoy the Patagonian Steppe, we will arrive at El Pedral lodge, which will be our home for the next three days.
El Pedral is located in Punta Ninfas, which is geographically in one of the extreme sides that form the mouth of the Nuevo Gulf, which is part of the UNESCO biosphere reserve.
We will be welcomed by an amazing person who has dedicated his life to study the Penguins and their behaviour and has been a protagonist in the creation and conservation of the El Pedral Magellanic Penguin Reserve.
-
The entire day will be dedicated to visiting the Penguin Colony with our renowned scientist and penguin lover. We will go for walks, visit the nesting area, wonder the area, help clean the beaches and in the late afternoon, we will finally return to the Estancia for a farewell dinner with the penguin lover.
-
Today we will leave the Estancia and head to the Dos Pozos area, where we will spend the day in the company of Elephant Seals. We will be led by a Scientist, Veterinarian and specialist in these incredible mammals.
She will surprise us with anecdotes and information about these huge animals, their behaviour, characteristics and much more.
For lunch, we will enjoy a delicious box lunch on site.
Ready to be amazed? At night together with an Astronomer, we will gaze at the immense Patagonian skyline.
-
After breakfast, we will drive to the area of Puerto Piramides. Along the way, we will make a stop in the steppe to meet our next protagonist: a scientist who specializes in large marine mammals, especially whales. He will share the next few days with us.
Our first approach to the whales will be very special, not only because it will be led by this incredible specialist, but also because it will be during sunset, which will give us privacy and an amazing opportunity to enjoy our encounter with these fabulous mammals.
-
At dawn, we will enjoy a private navigation to spot Whales that every year from June to December migrate to this area to mate. The experience is sublime, and even more so if we do it together with a local scientist with more than 40 years studying this species.
Upon disembarking, we will travel to Playa Larralde, located just 15 kilometres from Puerto Piramides on the San Jose Gulf. The Diaz Family, pioneers in artisanal fishing, will be waiting for us to board his boat and learn about this long family trade and tradition. Back at the beach, around noon, we will enjoy a feast with an undisrupted view of the Patagonian sea.
Before heading back to Puerto Piramides, we will say goodbye to our specialist for a few days.
-
The day is packed with emotions. We will meet early in the morning with our sea kayak expert and guide, Pablo Passera, who will give us a brief introduction of what we will experience once we arrive at Villarino Beach, again in the small San Jose Gulf. Kayaking and trekking will be the highlight of the day - if the whales allow it, we will have the possibility of rowing near them and watching them very closely. At noon, the break will be marked by a picnic lunch by the sea.
-
Today we will have an early start. After breakfast, we will say goodbye to Puerto Piramides and head south, precisely towards the Town of Camarones, declared an Authentic Town by the National Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Around noon, before arriving at Camarones, we will stop at Cabo Raso to have a light brunch overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
After settling in and taking some “me” time, it will be time to get to know the town and its history in a short but entertaining walking tour with our local host.
-
In the morning we will rejoin with our whale expert, who will share his knowledge, stories and anecdotes on the marine expedition to the Isla Leones Lighthouse. We will board the boat at Bahía Arredondo, on the coast of Estancia El Sauce. We will cross the waters of these lesser explored coastal regions, passing by islets, islands and coves, where without a doubt the geography and fauna will leave us breathless on more than one occasion. The sunset will find us travelling 30 kilometres between the estancia and the city of Camarones. Dinner will be a farewell but also a perfect occasion for fact-checking, revision and clearing any doubts that were left unquestioned as our whale expert will leave us ready for our following experiences.
-
This is our last day in Patagonia. We will focus on exploring and contemplating the Patagonian ocean from different natural viewpoints on the shores of Estancia El Sauce. Led by local guides, who know the area better than anyone else, they will take us to the most fantastic corners of the estancia, we will walk along trails observing the geological formation and scars left by the passage of time.
-
Last chance to enjoy the wind and the aromas of this incredible corner of Atlantic Patagonia. It's time to leave for Trelew and take the flight back to Buenos Aires.
The Big City awaits us to share a farewell dinner with some of our hosts, the Onesixth Expeditions crew and to say goodbye till the next adventure.
-
At the arranged time, we will take you to the international airport of Ezeiza Airport.

“Argentina, looking back in time ...
This project is dedicated to those that appreciate our culture, our history, and the boldness of those families that faced the elements to settle in this land, and protect it in the same way as our rangers do today..”
