Plastic Free Tourism
Our commitment to protecting destinations
_
The problem of plastic is one of the great environmental challenges of our time, and tourism is no stranger to this reality. Every trip involves people, services, food, logistics and consumption, and many of these experiences still depend on single-use plastics: bottles, wrappers, amenities, packaging and disposable utensils. In natural destinations, this waste can persist for decades, affecting landscapes, polluting ecosystems and endangering local wildlife.
In Argentina, the challenge takes on a particular dimension. The country has some of the most valuable ecosystems on the planet — from Patagonia to wetlands and subtropical forests — but it also faces structural limitations in waste management and recycling, especially in many tourist destinations far from large urban centres. This means that much of the plastic generated during travel cannot always be properly recovered or recycled, increasing the risk of environmental pollution.
At Onesixth Expeditions, we are signatories to the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, an initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organisation, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
This commitment brings together companies and tourist destinations around the world to prevent plastic pollution and move towards a circular economy in the tourism industry. By joining this initiative, we take on the challenge of eliminating unnecessary plastics, promoting reusable alternatives and working with our partners to reduce the environmental impact of travel, thus contributing to the protection of the ecosystems that make our expeditions possible.
ONESIXTH - PLASTIC FREE TOURISM
“We see travel as responsibility and business as impact: we embed plastic-free principles into our governance, operations and growth strategy, recognizing tourism as both an economic driver and a climate actor — and acting accordingly with measurable commitments.”
In this way, Onesixth Expeditions commits to:
Provide each passenger with a welcome kit containing a reusable metal bottle and a carrier bag, with the aim of avoiding the use of plastics during their stay in Argentina.
Encourage our value chain partners—local suppliers, hotels, and guides—to join the initiative and make progress in reducing single-use plastics.
Train our employees in practices and techniques to reduce the use of plastics in operations.
Communicate progress and lessons learned to partners, suppliers, travellers and industry stakeholders, with the aim of raising awareness and promoting positive change in the tourism industry.
